Kids Aid Tanzania promotes volunteering at the
Hisani and Watoto orphanages. It is a "not for profit" programme in which the money paid by
volunteers goes to the orphanages to provide for their running costs and to enable them to rent reasonable and secure
volunteer accommodation.
The principal task of volunteers is to teach English and Maths.
Whilst the children go to the local primary school from the age of 5 (although some start as late as 7), it is very overcrowded
with up to 150 in a class. Lack of space means that children can only attend for half of each school day. The
orphanages compensate for this by providing lessons for the other half of the day and also every weekday throughout
the school holidays. The local village children often join in and this helps to break down the stigma
associated with HIV/AIDS.
Volunteers also help with sporting and recreational activities.
